European businesses, organizations and individuals may be able to apply for Internet domain names with the dot-eu suffix before the year is out, European Commissioner Erkki Liikanen said on Thursday.
The European Parliament on Thursday endorsed a recommendation that proposes the implementation of the dot-eu top-level domain.
Europeans will be offered a new Internet address that Liikanen said will increase choice for European online businesses.

Starting this week, U.S trademark holders that want to add a dash of patriotism to their Internet address can register for the ``.us'' Internet domain name.
NeuStar Inc., the company hired by the government to administer the Internet suffix, said companies holding valid or pending trademarks have until April 9 to preregister their trademark name with the ``.us'' suffix.
On April 24, NeuStar will open the registration to the general public, including businesses and consumers.

The audio stream recently trickling from the ICANN hearing on Capitol Hill made some people outside the United States cringe a couple of times. The Telecommunications subcommittee of the House began on February 8th with some opening remarks, among them the following words from Congressman John Dingell: "We must see to it that the agency which we are constituting to act on behalf of the U.S. government in these matters functions fairly, well, efficiently, and in a fashion which is going to be in the broad overall public interest."

The next top level domain to be introduced is the .pro domain name, which is designed to be used by accountants, lawyers, doctors and other professionals. Register.com, who together with Virtual Internet control the .pro Registry under the name RegistryPro, are optimistic that launch will take place before the end of the second quarter of 2002. The domains will appear as third level domains within second level domains devoted to particular professions. For instance for the legal profession it could be law.pro, advocat.pro or bar.pro. The domains will be rolled out in various phases. The first phase will include legal, medical and accountancy. Other professions will be included in subsequent phases.
